Reconstructing images from your mind…digitally, just add music.

In recent news, UC Berkeley scientists have developed a system to capture visual activity in human brains and redevelop it as digital video clips. This is both a scary reality, and an amazing technological feat. Recording images from the brain isn’t what this machine exactly does, but it will closely match patterns in the brain waves, to millions of youtube video frames, finding a like image frame which can represent a video of the images. Crazy right?

I love this idea as a visual artist. It not only has medical uses such as possibilities of providing sight to the blind, but also think about what it may tell us about our own inner psyche. It is truly a dream machine.

My vision as a personal artist for this machine is a little different. What I am imagining is a close reality that just may happen in 10-20 years. My vision is to mix music, with the brain wave patterns displaying what the musician is thinking while playing the music. Think about the visual effect this could create. It would be so closely linked to the brain waves that it would also reflect the visual cues of the music….maybe. This would be a great visual trick to have as a musician. Can you imagine your own brainwaves as they are playing music displaying on a huge screen behind you as you play?
